The slippery serpent is often viewed as a creature of bad, due to its relative position to the earth and the baser, wild, evil senses that may rise from it. However, the slither of the serpent may also represent the ideals of eternity and love, particularly if the snake is swallowing its own tail. In this design, the serpent has curled into a figure-eight, which is a symbol of good-fortune, well-being, and wealth in many Asian cultures.
